CHAPTER FOURTEEN

A conference room at the Greek Foreign Ministry

That afternoon …

Ambassador Kyriakos Dimas did not feel right at all. It had been six hours since the gas attack, and plants still looked like they were breathing, and the clouds were still writing words in the sky.

He tried to focus. This meeting was important. He had already put it off for a few hours, his personal assistant coming up with some excuse.

The meeting couldn’t be put off any longer. The Turkish ambassador couldn’t be allowed to suspect that he had been at the café when the gas went off. Negotiating from a weakened position was always a bad idea. And who knew? Maybe the Turks planted that gas bomb. That waiter who set it off had disappeared. The police were looking for him. Since the guy didn’t have any papers, he would be hard to track. The owner of the café was no help. He was talking to flies.

Weak-minded fool. The café owner and Dimas's legal advisor were in the hospital, whacked out of their minds. Not him. Kyriakos Dimas was made of stronger stuff. He would soldier through this meeting and get the treaty signed. No one else was capable enough to do it. Indeed, only he could sign the treaty on behalf of the Greek government.

If only he could think straight!

Stay strong. Don’t show weakness. Strength and force of will is what got you up the political ladder. Don’t screw up now.

His personal assistant (what was his name?) came into the meeting room.

“Sir, the Turkish ambassador has arrived.”

“Excellent. Show him in. Then sit with me.”

His personal assistant hesitated, then nodded and left the room.

Ambassador Dimas wished he didn’t have to do this alone. His personal assistant was only a glorified secretary and would be of no help. Dimas had asked him to stay only so he didn’t have to sit there by himself, which gave off an impression of vulnerability. His legal advisor should be here. Tonia … something. She had been his main support in all this, and now she was babbling like an idiot in the hospital.

The doctors wanted him to stay in the hospital too, but Ambassador Dimas had talked his way out of it by downplaying his symptoms, saying that when he saw the gas billowing out of the broken bottle, he had held his breath and ran out just behind that bastard of a waiter.

He heard voices in the hallway. Footsteps approaching.

Ambassador Dimas saw the water in the decanter at the center of the table teeming with life, an entire universe of microscopic organisms as diverse and as alive and as vibrant as anything in the macroscopic world.

Parallel worlds living out of sight of each other, except to the chosen few who can see.

Ugh, get it together, Kyriakos!

Ambassador Dimas rubbed his eyes.

That was a mistake. The pressure created a rainbow explosion like the creation of the universe.

The origin of all things. All parallel worlds living together.

He opened his eyes.

“Keep it together. Keep it together,” he whispered.
